I spent about three to four hours this afternoon doing some ‘starter’ research for my exhibition package’s catalogue (my summer school project). It’s making me feel like maybe I want to change the direction of my (potential) thesis! And I’d love too include an exhibition proposal/plan within my thesis 🙂
Still Reading Picture Books: highlights from the Marcie Muir Collection of the National Library of Australia.
I’m looking into Muir’s collecting policies and practices, and how these are reflected in her collection (which is now held by the NLA).
- 24-26/2: Spent a faboo weekend at Karingal campsite with some lovely ladies from the NSW and ACT Olave Program (more to come on that – possibly on a dedicated blog/journal for my Guiding)
- 26-27/2: Spent a fun night at the farm (and was given a bunch of estate sale finds from my MIL – win!)
- 28/2-3/1: Visited Canberra (a whirlwind tour) with Daniel and caught up with more people than I thought possible
- Wrote my action plan for my OBP award (more to come on that)
Academic Accountability (plus some for the home)
My goals for today:
- Listen to the audio/video references I’ve bookmarked for my exhibition proposal
- Read current references for exhibition proposal
- Read articles on wall labels >> start drafting some wall labels for exhibition proposal
- Clean the kitchen
- Clean the bathroom
- Re-file the documents we took to Canberra (because losing a birth/marriage certificate is annoying!)

Lately I have been procrastinating. A lot. I have a million excuses I keep using for avoiding my school work:
- I’ve just had a week away at ‘school’, I need to relax and unwind
- I’m having another week away (Girl Guides conference and then a medical interview for Dan in Canberra), I need to relax and unwind before all of that travel
- I’ll just watch the end of this DVD – I hate leaving a video half-way through in case someone rewinds it and I lose my place (except that excuse is redundant nowadays but still in use!)
- The sun’s out, I should go outside and play with Charlie
- I want to finish my quilt, I better work on that
- We haven’t been to the farm in weeks, let’s spend a long weekend there
- The kitchen really needs cleaning, I’ll do that for a few hours
- Then I’ll do the bathroom!!
And so on and so forth.
It’s so hard to drag myself away from DVDs and YouTube and trashy day-time TV. This month of travel (past and future) has messed up my academic routine to no end and is frustrating the heck outta me!
The next component of my summer school assessment is due on Friday (the same day I leave for my Girl Guides conference) and I need to get it done by tomorrow at 6pm (which is ‘computer shut down time’ for me). Today I have been doing the basics for it, which can then be fleshed out in the final draft.
It makes me feel like I have, maybe, finally started to accomplish something (beyond sitting on the couch all day). I think having posted my ‘to do’ list to Instagram (and subsequently Twitter) really helped me with my accountability (it’s, you know, out there now, so it has to be done).

I have about an hour before I wake Dan for the evening and in that time I
want to WILL complete the first draft of this assessment (basically, a written exhibition concept proposal).

I am pretty sure I have worn this outfit a hundred times. I love it. It is comfy and makes me look ‘finished’ without being an overly complicated outfit. And heck, anything that involves pattern mixing gets a big thumbs up from me!
Today I am catching up on my blogging and #AcWri commitments, in between running errands. If you follow me on Instagram (or Twitter — @WiniC_SRPB for both) I try to photograph my daily ‘to do’ list in order to create some form of accountability.
And I promise. I do wear shoes. I just feel weird wearing them inside!
My studious pal Jenn has come up with a brilliant way of sharing our writing goals with each other (and other academic writers) as a form of accountability: the Academic Writing Accountability program. This initiative works in conjunction with her Studious Network (an online forum for academics) and is communicated via (our best friend) Twitter (using the hash tag #AcWri). Jenn cites the following reasons for creating the program:
Daily writing habit is essential for academic success and this habit can be cultivated through practice.
Be accountable for your own writing by publicly share your writing goal.
Productivity will increase when it is being measured or monitored.
Peer support is the best motivation in academic writing.
I find all of these points relevant to my need for accountability. And the easy access to peer support via Twitter (and the Studious Network) means I am constantly getting feedback from others in my position.
So, what are my goals for Academic Writing Accountability?
- Write 300 words every day — this does not have to be writing chapters but can include thesis related blog posts, notes I take while reading, etc.
- Make daily updates to my peers (via Twitter using the #AcWri tag) to maintain daily accountability
- Write a weekly ‘totals’ entry in my thesis journal to record my long term progress
I have decided I need to add an element to my #AcWri goals:
- Read two articles towards my research every day — this is at least for the short term, while I am still at the very beginning of my thesis
So yesterday I accomplished the following:
- Read one academic article and one UN convention paper (on the rights of children)
- Got my haircut (picture to come) — and this morning, after eight months of laziness, I also got my eyebrows re-shaped
- Did two loads of washing (‘full time’ work over summer has left me well behind in the housework department)
Things I need to start doing more every day:
- Making exercise a priority (I am not concerned about my weight, I am just concerned that I am becoming physically unhealthily lazy)
- Having a general clear up around the house
- Walking Charlie (this is for me, but mostly for him – it is not fair keeping him cooped up so much)
- Spend time sewing (this is my main hobby and I have neglected it, meaning my quilt is only partially pieced)
- Read more for pleasure
My goals for today:
- Email my landlord/boss with notes about cleans I did this morning
- Read two academic articles
- Have an overview look at QAG, NGA, and NGV (re: curating for kids)
- Write a daily schedule (to fit in the above list, plus my studies and with room to do any cleaning work)

Martina Lynne wrote the following about accountability (as a way of ‘keeping your sanity’ as a postgrad):
8. Create accountability. This is especially important for the kind of work we do without much supervision, like teaching and studying for exams and dissertating. It’s easy to make those lists and build that structure, but if you have no one to report to but yourself, it can also be easy to slip into a cycle of not meeting your own expectations, making excuses, feeling shitty, and then getting overwhelmed by the mounting overflow work. Instead, make a weekly date with a friend where you report to each other how things are going or create study groups, even if you’re not all working on the exact same materials. Not only will this make sure you don’t drop the ball, but just spending that time explaining what you’ve been working on will help solidify it in your mind and be valuable practice for when you have to explain yourself to — gulp! — exam panels or dissertation chairs or hiring committees.
Unfortunately, I lack peers. And my academic friends are largely online nowadays. As such, I plan on keeping accountability within my journal.
My goals for today:
- Read at least two new journal articles
- Read through reading notes and start refining topic
- Get my hair cut (not an ‘academic’ goal, I know, but I have been putting this off for so long it needs to be crossed off the ‘to do’ list!)
- Take Charlie for a jaunt at the beach (exercise, fitness, and good health have to become a priority in my life and are no longer allowed to take a back seat)
